It is winter which means it rains more in Christchurch. Everything is wet and the mountain bike trails are closed. So while it looks beautiful it is not great for outside activities.
Rainy day on the University of Canterbury campus
Hanging out in coffee shops seems to be the most popular activity in Christchurch. Le Cafe in the Art Centre has great outdoor seating in nice weather but it turns out the inside is pretty cozy on cold rainy days. They have a fireplace and an upstairs alcove perfect for an afternoon of reading and drinking flat whites.
